As part of the big problem of waste recycling, the “ecological islands” occupy a place of particular interest: for citizens, because these areas are within the city, near the spaces of inhabitants’ daily life; and for architects, because they have the task of proving that these places can be elements of qualification of urban space. Under the guidance of professors from various disciplines (Urban Design, Architectural Design, Urban Planning, Building Technology), about thirty students have been working on this issue for Nocera. In this city the environmental issues, and within them the waste, have been put in the foreground, underscoring the complexity and working on citizen engagement, also through increasing awareness of cultural issues related to waste management.
